EXPLORING DIFFERENT STITCHES AND TECHNIQUES

These courses are a taster to explore your interest in different techniques and stitches. They are suitable for beginners as well as embroiderers who have some knowledge and want to broaden their horizons. Sue will be covering different types of stitches and techniques with different types of embroidery. When you book the courses please let us know which type of embroidery you wish to have a go at first, so that Sue can plan the day accordingly. You may have a piece of embroidery you have always wanted to do, a technique you have always wanted to learn, a kit where you do not know where to start, help with an interpretation of design or work that you need help in finishing. Sue will try to give all the advice you need to get you on your way. Techniques to be covered are-
Surface Embroidery – White Work – Black Work – Ribbon Embroidery – Canvas Work – Counted Cross Stitch – Elizabethan Embroidery – Taste of Stumpwork – Brazilian Embroidery – Hardanger ( counted open thread embroidery).

STUMPWORK WORKSHOPS

Stumpwork is a fascinating range of techniques creating a great deal of interest at the moment in the embroidery world. Raised embroidery, now known as Stumpwork, is drawn from the expressions and vivid designs of 17th Century embroidery. The motifs and other pieces are often embroidered separately and then applied to the main piece to give dimensions and reality involving a fascinating range of techniques and are very challenging to work. These workshops are for students who have already gained some knowledge of stumpwork.

GOLDWORK -BASIC TASSEL – BASIC BEADING - WORKSHOPS

This series of courses will cover Goldwork  - this workshop will cover all the basic techniques in Goldwork embroidery including gold thread couching. Basic tassel making - learn how to make a tassel.using simple techniques, bead the top using seed and bugle beads. A pack will be available for purchase from the tutor. Basic beading - you will learn the basic techniques of beading to create a necklace or bracelet. You will need at least two workshops.If you are interested please let us know which of the three techniques you wish to cover when booking so that the basic packs will be available on the day of course. Samples can be seen at the Centre.

KNITTING
LEARN TO KNIT

Saturday 4th September                                               10.00am – 4.00pm
This is an introduction to knitting. The workshop will show you how to cast on and cast off, how to knit and purl and how to use these to create a garter and stocking stitch. You will try simple rib and moss stitch borders, some simple shaping and will look at basic knitting terminology and basic pattern reading skills. At the end of this course, you will be able to start a project right away and have started to learn to love knitting and want to do more.

LAYERCAKE TRIANGLES WITH BEACH HUT BORDER

CROCHET
INTERMEDIATE CROCHET

Saturday 11th September                                           10.00am – 4.00pm
Follow on from Learn to crochet, during this day you will learn how to colour change neatly, crochet ‘in the round’ and use more intricate stitches. We will learn to understand crochet patterns and then go on to make you own corsages, however some patterns will be provided. Skill level; Knowledge of basic stitches and confidence in holding the hook are essential.

PATCHWORK AND QUILTING
APPLIQUE-JACK IN THE PULPIT

Using techniques for appliqué, freezer paper, needle turn and segmented appliqué you will make a small quilt called “Jack in the Pulpit”. You will learn how to transfer the design onto your backing fabric, make freezer paper templates and use a few basic embroidery stitches such as backstitch and French knots

BEADING
BEGINNERS JEWELLERY MAKING

Learn basic jewellery making techniques to make up two necklace and earring sets, plus a bracelet. Go away at the end of the day with a feeling  of achievement. No previous experience needed and all tools, finding and beads are provided to make up the jewellery.

KNITTING
PROFESSIONAL FINISHING

Sunday 19th September                                                      11.15am – 4.45pm
This very popular workshop will provide you with all the necessary skills needed to give your hand knitted projects a professional finish. Techniques covered will include picking up stitches for neck and button bands, short row shaping, grafting and mattress stitch. You will be required to knit and bring with you some small stocking stitch samples which will enable you to get the most out of your day. Instructions for these will be sent nearer the time. This course is suitable for intermediate and experienced knitters. New knitters must have knowledge of the basic techniques.

MAKE A BAG

 Using your own fabrics make this easey-peasy bag in a day. Suitable for all levels. Maureen will supply the rings and wadding pack at a cost of £4.50. A sample of the bag is on show at the Centre.

CROCHET
LEARN TO CROCHET

Sunday 3rd October                                                             11.15pm – 4.45pm
This workshop is for the beginner (or someone who needs a refresher course). You will learn how to hold a hook and yarn, some basic stitches and how to read a pattern that will enable you to complete a simple project.

TAPESTRY
HAVE FUN WITH TAPESTRY

Saturday 9th October                                                         10.00pm – 1.00pm
Tapestry – also known as canvas work or needlepoint – is having a revival. Come along with a tapestry that you wish to work and a suitable clip or hand rotating frame and learn the basics to get started. The staff are more than willing to give advice on what to purchase for this project.

BEGINNERS COUNTED CROSS STITCH

Saturday 9th October                                                           1.30pm – 4.30pm
This half-day course is ideal for the total beginner, resulting in stitching from a chart of a cross stitch design provided. We will explore the various types of materials that can be used for counted thread work with the opportunity to try a choice of fabric before starting your kit. Course kit is provided.

PATCHWORK AND QUILTING
MINIATURES IN QUILTS

We will explore how to use miniature star blocks to spice up your quilts. Using a few basic methods you will make a miniature Ohio Star block and use it to make a pincushion. You will also have the opportunity to make a miniature mystery block.

HAVE FUN WITH CROCHET

This workshop uses simple designs to create a variety of projects. Using the basic stitches the day would hope to encourage you to experiment with different yarns by making a small useful or decorative project. Skill level; Ideally participants should have some knowledge of how to hold the hook and basic stitches , however, due to the nature of the projects this is suitable for a beginner.

Learn to use your sewing machine with freedom as you learn to vermachelli, (spaghetti/stippling), trace patterns onto the fabric, sew/mark onto dark fabrics, create patterns and basically enjoy yourself for a day. Students must have a sewing machine in good working order. A kit of cut squares and fluff at a cost of £4.50 is available on the day from Maureen.

KNITTING                                                                                         
CHRISTMAS KNITS

This project based workshop has a festive theme and offers you a chance to try a variety of different knitting techniques including fairisle, intarsia, knitting with beads and sequins and textured stitches such as cables and bobbles. You will work from a selection of patterns for decorative knitted Christmas sacks whilst using festive colours and yarns to create some eye catching Christmas inspired designs!

FREESTYLE EMBROIDERY WITH ROWANDEAN
RURAL SCENE

Create a landscape with easy stitches and layers of fabric. Learn how to apply watercolours to create an interesting background. Chose form a selection of designs with walls, field, stiles, wild grasses, willow and cow parsley. All materials provided by Rowandean.

LAP OR COT QUILT

Easiest quilt ever – 37” by 54” Make this super fast lap/cot quilt out of pre-cut squares We put the squares together to make the quilt top and then “bag” the quilt with wadding and finish it by “tying” No actual quilting is involved. Pre cut squares are sold to the class.

This workshop is project based and provides you with the opportunity to experiment with different types of yarn, beads and wire to produce crocheted jewellery and other decorations for example, tassels and braids. KNITTING
KNITTING WITH COLOUR – FAIRISLE AND INTARSIA

This workshop will show you the different techniques of knitting with colour which are” fairisle and intarsia”. Whilst working on a simple fairisle panel you will learn the two-handed method of carrying yarns which will help you to achieve an even tension and neat flat fabric. You will then learn how to manage your colours and avoid holes whilst working on a simple intarsia panel. The two panels can them be sewn together to make a cute drawstring bag.

STARS AND HOLLY TABLE RUNNER

This wonderful runner incorporates an Ohio star with a twist and also includes a technique for fusible appliqué. All set in diagonal stripes.

GUIDE TO TUTORS
Marion Cave has recently joined our group of tutor to teach crochet. Marion was taught to knit and crochet by her grandmother as a child and has a lifelong interest in all things crafty. She particularly enjoys working with fabric and threads and is a member of the Wirral Embroiderers Guild.
Maureen Crawford a well known local quilter joined us to teach Patchwork & Quilting. She is a member of the local and national Guild of Quilters and has won prizes at the national competitions for her quilts.
Heike Gittins is a mobile Rowan Design Consultant based in Ruthin near Chester. Heike has a keen love for all things textile and enjoys sharing this love through teaching others. A German national, having lived in the UK for more than 20 years. Heike has been knitting and crocheting since childhood, her workshops are mostly project based with an emphasis on accessories for body and home. Heike also teachers the continental technique as well as sock knitting with 5 needles.

Emma King is a freelance knitting consultant. After working with Rowan yarns Emma is now writing knitting books and has been on a workshop tour of the West Coast of America in Spring 2006

Barry Moss  Barry started quilting in Canada in 1988 and has not looked back. He started off by watching TV programs and using “how to books” as well as attending workshops .His passion for quilting and patchwork has only increased over the years to teaching workshops in North America and now in the UK. He loves miniatures as well as appliqué and now shares these two mediums with others in the form of workshops and talks to quilting groups throughout North Wales and North East England

Sue Rajan is a meticulous stitcher who has been a tutor at the Centre for the last few years pecializing in the modern interpretation of 17th and 18th century embroideries, Sue has also been tutoring highly successful bead workshops.

Kay Thomas is a jewellery designer from Chester who supplies various shops in the area with her modern and tasteful jewellery. Kay enjoys all crafts    particularly beading and has been teaching jewellery making for many years

Katrina Witten is co-designer of the internationally-known surface embroidery kit company, Rowandean. In Autumn 2002, Katrina was invited to British Hills, near Tokyo, Japan to give a lecture on the History of English Embroidery. Katrina also ran workshops on free style embroidery whilst there. On each course at the Centre, Katrina brings a mouth-watering array of threads and textures for use by the students as they create their own unique English country scenes under her guidance. 

All fees must be paid in full at the time of booking. In the event of a class becoming fully booked your name will be added to a waiting list. Telephone bookings will be taken and payment by Credit or Debit Card or by cheque will be accepted. Once you have booked and paid for a place on a workshop, you will receive confirmation of your place together with details of requirements you need for that specific course.

Please note that tea and coffee are included in all class fees. Lunch is not provided, but can be obtained at the Country Mouse in the courtyard or a packed lunch can be eaten on the premises We reserve the right to cancel the course if bookings are insufficient. Students for whom places were booked will be notified as soon as possible and may transfer to another class if they wish or a refund will be given in full.
If you have to cancel your place on any course, please give at least 2 weeks notice otherwise we may not be able to offer a refund.
We reserve the right to any reasonable alterations to the class programme or substitute tutors.
Students are requested to bring their own basic sewing box, to include scissors, needles, thimbles if used and also a pencil and notebook for any note taking, Please note that on some of the courses customers will receive a requirement list on booking a course – it is possible to let customers know before what is on the list for them to purchase. On receiving a booking fee a confirmation letter with a requirement list (if applicable) is sent to the student.

Courses can be arranged for private groups, but must have a minimum of 8 students
